Food Allergy Can Openers: Those who made the Thanksgiving feast safe!
Food Allergy Can Openers: Those who made this year’s Thanksgiving feast safe!
Food Allergy Can Openers make our holidays safe. They accommodate us. They include us. And they never make us feel guilty.
Let’s be clear. Some families get it immediately and accommodate a child with a food allergy. Some don’t. And there are many, many families in between.
For some, it’s a constant struggle to educate and to encourage and to beg to have a child safely included. Is it possible to make great grandma’s special stuffing safe? Or Uncle Ted’s mashed potatoes without butter? Or Aunt Gert’s Green Bean Almondine without almonds? Of course it is.
I had an awesome Thanksgiving. I enjoyed an amazing safe Thanksgiving feast. Every item on the table was free from dairy and tree nuts! No exceptions.
If you had a safe Thanksgiving, hug the Can Openers! If your family wasn’t accommodating, keep working behind the scenes to show them why it’s important and how it can happen. Whether out of fear or selfishness or pure ignorance, some family members are reluctant to change. This makes the job of the parents of a child with an allergy that much more difficult, especially when feelings are hurt, cruel things are said, or lines are crossed. But there is aways hope. I’ve heard countless stories from families who, by continuing to educate and advocate and show examples of other families who “get it,” were able to turn the most reluctant family members into full blown Can Openers!
