Food Allergy Can Opener: 'Mrs. Renner is truly a blessing'
Mrs. Renner is a Food Allergy Can Opener
Submitted by Miranda Brash @mirandabrash —My son Walker is severely allergic to peanuts and tree nuts and his first-grade teacher, Mrs. Renner, is simply AMAZING at making sure he stays safe while he is at school.
While our school has unfortunately been reluctant to ban nuts on campus, Mrs. Renner has taken it upon herself to make her classroom a “Nut Free Zone,” even placing posters outside her room letting everyone know that nuts are not welcome in her room. She has also instituted a policy of having the children use hand wipes each morning as they enter her room to make sure no one is accidentally brining in any leftover allergens from home. This is particularly important in Walker’s case as he has a history of anaphylactic contact reactions.
Mrs. Renner goes out of her way to make sure that any and all school activities involving food are safe for Walker to participate in—from reading and texting me food labels, to giving me ample notice of any upcoming activities where we may need to provide a safe food substitution for Walker, to wiping the lunch tables and chairs each day and seeking out additional information about food safety at school when we need it—she truly goes above and beyond.
One of the many things I love about Mrs. Renner is that she does all this because she genuinely wants to be a CAN OPENER for Walker. Unfortunately, there have been times where it was clear to us that a person we were forced to rely upon to help us keep Walker safe was doing so begrudgingly. I am sure this is something that a lot of food allergy families can relate to and one of the things that can make food allergies feel so isolating. No one ever wants to feel like they are a burden or a nuisance. But Mrs. Renner never makes us feel that way! She is always happy to help and accommodate in any way she can.
Mrs. Renner is truly a blessing to us and we love her so much!
